Magic Mouthwash – Prescription Oral Rinse Relief

Tailored Oral Rinse for Mouth Sores, Ulcers & Mucositis

Magic Mouthwash is a custom-compounded oral rinse (“dispensing item”) prepared by a pharmacist according to your doctor’s prescription, designed to relieve painful oral conditions such as mucositis, mouth ulcers, thrush, and inflammation of the oral mucosa.
Because it is compounded, there is no single standard formula — common ingredients include a numbing agent (e.g., lidocaine), an antihistamine (diphenhydramine), an antacid/coating agent (e.g., Maalox or magnesium/aluminium hydroxide), plus sometimes an antifungal (nystatin), an antibiotic, or a steroid depending on the underlying condition.
Patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or with severe ulcerative oral conditions often receive Magic Mouthwash to help reduce pain, improve eating/swallowing comfort and support oral hygiene maintenance.

  • Provides immediate symptomatic relief — coating, numbing and soothing painful mouth sores and ulcers.
  • Helps reduce secondary infection risk in ulcerated/compromised oral mucosa when antifungal or antibiotic agents included.
  • Custom formulation allows targeted therapy based on individual cause (fungal, bacterial, inflammatory) rather than generic mouth rinse.
  • Supports nutrition and comfort by enabling eating and drinking in patients with painful oral conditions.
  • Facilitates continuity of treatment (e.g., cancer therapy, ulcer management) by managing oral complications.

  1. Shake or stir the bottle if instructed. Use the measuring device provided (e.g., measuring cup or spoon).
  2. Measure the prescribed amount (commonly 5–10 mL) and swish it thoroughly in your mouth, covering affected areas for 30 – 60 seconds.
  3. Spit out the solution unless directed to swallow by your doctor (some formulations may allow swallow for throat/esophageal involvement).
  4. Avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes afterward to allow coating agents to remain effective.
  5. Use at the interval prescribed (often every 4-6 hours) for the period your doctor recommends.

1. What conditions is Magic Mouthwash used for?
It is used for oral mucositis (mouth sores from chemo/radiation), severe aphthous ulcers, oral thrush, and other inflammatory or ulcerative oral conditions.

2. Is there a standard formula?
No – the composition is variable and depends on the individual’s condition and doctor’s order.

3. Can I swallow it?
Ordinarily you spit it out unless your doctor directs swallowing (such as for throat/esophageal involvement).

4. How soon will I feel relief?
Many patients notice decreased pain or burning soon after first uses; full benefit may require consistent use over days as per your physician’s plan.

5. Are there side-effects?
Possible side-effects include numbness (especially if lidocaine present), altered taste, tingling sensation, dryness, or irritation. Report any worsening symptoms to your healthcare provider.

Custom compounded — may include: Lidocaine viscous 2% (anesthetic), Diphenhydramine elixir 12.5 mg/5 mL (antihistamine), Maalox (Aluminium hydroxide & Magnesium hydroxide) or Antacid coating agent, Nystatin (100,000 U/mL) (antifungal), Dexamethasone 0.5 mg/5 mL (steroid), Tetracycline or other antibiotic — actual contents per your prescribed formulation.

  • Prescription only — dispense and use only under supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.
  • External/ oral rinse use: Swish for the time instructed, then spit out unless your doctor instructs otherwise. Avoid swallowing large amounts.
  • Avoid using hot drinks or foods immediately afterward if numbing agents are included — numbness may increase risk of burns.
  • Store as directed (some formulations may require refrigeration). Do not share with others even if symptoms are similar — formulation varies per prescription.
  • If you experience new allergic reaction, increasing pain, bleeding, or your condition worsens, discontinue use and consult your physician.
