Apixaget 5 mg Tablet – High‑Strength Factor Xa Inhibitor for Serious Clot Control

Apixaget is a prescription blood‑thinning tablet that contains apixaban, a direct inhibitor of activated factor Xa. It is used to prevent and treat blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non‑valvular atrial fibrillation.

The 5 mg film‑coated tablet is pink and oval‑shaped. It’s designed for patients requiring full anticoagulation, such as those recovering from clotting events or at continued risk of clots. According to the manufacturer, it can be taken with or without food, and — if a patient can’t swallow it — it may be crushed and mixed with water, apple juice, or applesauce.

  • Effectively prevents and treats DVT and PE
  • Reduces risk of stroke in non‑valvular atrial fibrillation
  • Fixed dosing, no routine INR monitoring required
  • Can be crushed and mixed for patients who can’t swallow
  • High selectivity for factor Xa, providing strong anticoagulation

  1. Take 1 tablet (5 mg) twice daily, or as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  2. Swallow the tablet whole with water; food is optional.
  3. If you cannot swallow the tablet, crush it and mix with water, D5W, apple juice, or applesauce, then take immediately.
  4. Take your doses at roughly the same times each day to maintain steady blood levels.
  5. Do not stop taking apixaget without consulting your doctor — sudden discontinuation can raise clot risk.

Q1: What is Apixaget 5 mg used for?
A1: It’s used to treat and prevent blood clots (DVT, PE) and to reduce stroke risk in atrial fibrillation.

Q2: How often should I take it?
A2: Usually twice daily, but your doctor will decide based on your condition.

Q3: What are common side effects?
A3: Bleeding is the main side effect — this can include nosebleeds, bruising, bleeding gums, or more serious bleeding.

Q4: Can I take Apixaget 5 mg if I have kidney or liver problems?
A4: Use with caution. For severe liver impairment or coagulopathy, it may not be suitable.

Q5: What if I miss a dose?
A5: Take it as soon as you remember, then continue with your regular twice-daily schedule. Do not double up to make up for a missed dose.

Apixaban 5 mg, microcrystalline cellulose, lactose, croscarmellose sodium, sodium lauryl sulfate, magnesium stearate, film-coating (hypromellose, titanium dioxide, triacetin, iron oxide red).

  • Avoid if there is active bleeding or high risk of hemorrhage.
  • Use with caution in severe hepatic impairment (liver disease), especially if coagulopathy is present.
  • Discontinuing apixabet abruptly may increase your risk of clots — consult your doctor before stopping.
  • Use caution during spinal/epidural procedures; risk of spinal or epidural hematoma.
  • Avoid combining with strong dual inhibitors of CYP3A4 and P-gp (e.g. some antifungals, HIV protease inhibitors), which can raise apixaban levels.
  • Store below 30 °C, in a tightly closed container, and protect from moisture.
